Over the last number of days I have been talking to you about self confidence. We have seen so far, that self confidence can be affected by our past, our upbringing, our peers and also by our inner critic. Today I want to talk to you about your self image.
Self image is something that those in the profession, ie Psychologist, have studied for years, to find out how it shapes us. There is no one singular definition of self image, so let´s keep it simple and say that self image, in its most basic form, is about how we feel and see ourselves. Self image encapsulates some of the following; how we see our status in life, how we view our role in society, how we physically look and feel. All of these items contribute to self image.
Many people have a positive self image, others are more negative. How do people have a positive self image? They either know it internally or they have been told by others that they are good, are a useful member of society or of their organisation. If a person is told that they are useless, a burden, a good for nothing, this will of course impact their self image.
Let me now add to our idea of self image. Self image can also be built based on how others view us, not just how we view ourselves. If people react badly to a person, don´t like their company or avoid them, this can lead a person to have a poor self image. All of these factors are what creates your self image.
Can I ask you something? Do you care what people think about you? Obviously we have to care somewhat, but for example I sometimes have to travel to Latin America to train in Spanish. I know my Spanish is far from perfect, but I don´t care what people think. I do my best and people appreciate it. If you are constantly waiting for acceptance from other people you will need people to validate your self image. This is not a good position to be in. You need to be confident in yourself. You need to take risks, move out of your comfort zone, discover new places, ideas, travel and live life with confidence.
There are times when society demands a lot from us. We have to “be” someone, maintain an image. This can affect women and teenagers a lot. Teenagers can be seeking to find themselves, to be accepted. While women can sometimes feel under pressure to look pretty, have careers, be good mothers etc. Society can be guilty of this. It puts a lot of pressure on us. This pressure can lead people to addictions, abusing drugs, drink, eating disorders and worse. We use these addictions to make us feel better, stronger, more powerful. However, in the end these are temporary measures which will not help you in the long run.
So in conclusion, you need to have a positive self image of yourself. Believe in yourself, know your limits and play to strengths. Don´t wait for people to validate your self image, you can validate yourself!
I hope you are starting to become more confident and taking ideas from each article, and discovering more about yourself and your confidence.
