Before delving into my methodology it is important to define what coaching is.
“Coaching is building a place of safety and trust, where the client can talk to the coach and explore options without judgement. The coach can not provide answers, however, he is the key that unlocks the potential of the client and empowers them to move forward”
This is my personal definition of what a coach should be and it is the way I deal with my clients.
I know there are a few burning question:
“Why don’t you provide answers for me?”
It is a great question and at this point I can answer that for you! For me the coaches job is to unlock the answers within each person. We all know what we need to do but sometimes we can’t face it, or can’t find the right answer. If I give you the answer, as I see it, I have immediately shifted the responsibiliy of the action from you to me.
Thus if something goes wrong and you try to implement the strategy then you don’t have yourself to blame – “Richard told me to do it.” This serves no purpose as coaching is about making you responsible and empowering you to make the right decision, which you own. When you find the solutions to the challenges you face they have a deeper and more lasting impact on you.
“If that’s the case can I not find the answers without a coach?”
It’s not always that easy to find the answers yourself (that’s why you’re here right?) A great coach knows the right way to ask questions to elicit the most suitable solutions from you. Self coaching and searching for the answers within you can be very difficult, thus the need for a coach.
Will we work well together? – The first thing that I do is schedule a 15 minute call, free of charge, with you to see if we are a good fit. No matter how great I may be if we don’t work well together then you will not get the best experience. In my experience there is a coach for everyone. I may or may not be that coach!
Where are you now? – Finding out where you right now in your life is very important. We will use a special tool to see what areas of your life may need attention – the outcomes may surprise you.
Where do you want to be, and why? – Next let’s see where you want to be and why it is important to be there. This is the core of the coaching. Making sure that where you want to go is the right direction for you and you are doing it for the right reasons.
Creating the roadmap – once we know where you want to go and why, we can begin to create the roadmap to make this happen.
Check in – I believe that once we finish our coaching sessions we should have a check in session of 30 minutes every second week. After that they will become monthly for a period of 6 months. The idea is to make sure you can progress on your path empowered
