Do you remember that famous phrase? It was from an English program called Mastermind. However, how many times do you start something and not finish it? You know you start off really really excited about something only to suddenly fall flap out of inspiration and you stop!
This has happened to me on countless occasions – I start a new project, full of excitement, I work hard on it and then I lose interest and forget about. So many of us have half finished books, product, podcasts etc that with a little more could be amazing products. On the day that you decide to stop the project you are working on, a small glow of your goal burns out. You chalk this down to another thing you could not finish. However, before you know it you start on another project, only to experience the same thing.
How would you like to change this from happening, so that you can finally finish something that you started? This article is going to give you some really helpful tips to make this happen.
Just for a second imagine that feeling of satisfaction as you finish one project, then start on the next and finish that too. Before you know you have 3 projects finished and are already planning your forth!
Are you excited yet? I hope so and now that you are ready to learn let’s jump right in and find out how you can complete everything you start!
Prioritise – Before you decide to take on a new project or change something in an existing one, ask yourself if what you re about to do is really important? If what you are going to start is not going to get you closer to your goals well then it is best not to start it as it will only distract you!
Is the timing right? Before you start something new ask yourself “Is now the right time to take on a new task?” Will taking on this project take time away from another more important project (remember sometimes we self sabotage ourselves by taking on extra work so we don’t need to complete the current project!)
Always think about what else is going on. If you want to plan big project that is going to take 6 weeks, and you know that holidays are coming up (for example Christmas) then take a good look and ask if you are setting yourself up for a situation where you won’t be able to finish what you’ve started!
Get committed. You have decided that your project is important, you know the timing is right, now you have to commit to it. How do you make sure you are committed? Use the old fashioned way of writing it down! Yes it can be that simple. Plan out each step of what you need to do. You see most people fail to plan and thus don’t get their product finished as they have no plan. Once you know what you have to do make sure you set a time frame that you need to follow in order to get this project finished. Are you energetic? Let’s face it, if you are currently working full time, looking after your partner and or family, then in order to work on your internet business means that you have to work extra hours. Either early mornings or late nights. Ask yourself if you are looking after yourself and have enough energy to take everything on. If you are overly tired this is going to affect all aspects of your life.
It is possible to burn the candle at both ends, but only for a short time. Eventually you will become tired and then crash. Again I know as it happens to me on occasions.
What is the end result? Let’s assume that you finish your project, then what? How will it impact your life or the life of others? Will your project make you money? Make you happier? Help others? You see if there is no end purpose to your project then you may feel unfilled at the end of the process.
For example when I write my kindle books, a lot of the time I do it for the pure satisfaction and the therapeutic feeling I get from it. Making money from it is just a by product for me – yes really!
Ground yourself in reality. Live in the real world! At the end of the day there is only so much you can do. You need to be realistic when taking on a new project. If you try and take on too big a project and know in your heart of hearts that you will not be able to finish it then this is not a good start!
Start off with small projects that you know you can finish, then once you have a strategy then you can move onto bigger projects.
Let me tell you finishing what you start can be difficult. However, with the tips above and some good planning you can ensure your success.
