I wrote this email but thought it was worth sharing with you:
As I promised here is my experience, or more what I learnt about meditation!
So very close to where I work I found that there was a meditation centre. It is a place that I discovered a few months ago and kept thinking “I have to go there because it is close by work“, not only that but they offer special monthly passes, free meditation etc.
As I always do, I checked out the website, read up about it and it seemed pretty sweet.
Yesterday as I went for my lunch time walk I passed by the centre, and had a quick look at the leaflets they had outside. I decided what the heck now was the time to go in and talk to them.
As I got to the door I saw a notice, “Sorry we are meditating, back at 1430.” I found that quite funny to be honest, and since it was already 1438 I decide to keep going on my walk.
Seems that it was meant to be that it was closed as later on in the evening I started to look up about this sub section of Buddhism called New Kadampa Tradition or NKT. I was quite interested by what I read. It appears that many have said it is not a very pure version of Buddhism, a break away group if you will, that some have referred to as a cult!
Yeah that last word frightened me. I guess I thought that there could be no harm, but the more I read the more concerned I got.
In some sense I felt let down that something I wanted to try, and was so close to me was not meant to be. However, on the other hand I was glad I did my research and found out about it.
Perhaps this is the problem with organised “religions” and I use that word in the loosest possible way. Sometimes they can not focus on what they want to give people and get “corrupted.”
I don’t know have you found that or experience that Richard?
But of course I am not one to give up so I kept looking on the internet as I thought really if one wants to meditate perhaps there are courses and audios one can listen to.
And that is what I set out to do last night!
Here was my criteria:
1) Find an interesting website with info about meditation that spoke to me and that I could connect to
2) If they had a product I would look to purchase it, if it were not that expensive
3) Ensure that the offered some extras (he he he we all like to get more value for money right?)
That’s what I found when I visited 3 minute meditation.
Here’s the first thing I liked, nice clean page, with clear information. Secondly the person who ran the site told about the virtues of just having to meditate for 3 minutes. I thought “heck I can commit 3 minutes to meditate”
I think the two things that got me where, the 28 day challenge and the journal included. I love to journal and write out how I feel, so this package had everything!
So far I have done two meditations – last night and this morning, but I will keep you update on how it goes.
“Making time for ourselves is important – can you spare 3 minutes to refocus your mind?”
