It’s really important to be able to have a visual reminder of your goal. In fact when I teach people goal setting I ask them
to really visualise what it will be like when they achieve the goal. I also ask them to make sure that they create a dreamboard so they can have a visual reminder each day about their goals.
Shit Happens!
The problem with life is shit happens! No matter how positive, no matter what goals we have set things do happen. For many it can be tough to get back on the horse and resume their goals. This is where having a visual reminder is so important. It keeps you focused, makes you realise the why in your life and allows you to get back up and keep on going.
When you know why you are getting back up on the horse and continuing to move forward it gives you confidence, and makes it easier. Knowing your why allows you to feel more confident that no matter what life throws at you, you will be able to overcome it and keep on moving.
This feeling in itself will keep you motivated and keep you moving closer to your goals.
Here are some strategies to help you visualise your goals
Use Post-it notes
A simple, cheap and effective way to help you have a constant reminder of your goals. Buy a few packs of post it notes in different colors. Maybe even buy some coloured pens and then write out your goals, your ideas, thoughts, motivations on post it notes and leave them around the house where you will see them often.
Why not put one on the bathroom mirror – after all you will look at yourself each morning. Another great place is the fridge door, coffee machine, mug, on your tv, computer monitor, on your laptop, well you get the idea. It’s somewhere that you are going to see the note at least twice or three times a day.Have a mixture of specific and general notes. However, make sure they are motivating and positive.
For example “remember to eat 5 pieces of fruit today” or “wow you look great”, you have to motivate yourself and make sure that you goal is always out there. It may seem simple but it works.
Note Cards
Remember those old fashion note cards ? What we used to use before we had electronic diaries? Why not buy some of these note cards and write out each of your goals on them, then write out some inspiration messages or quotes on the rest.
Keep some in your bag, or buy your bedside and when you wake up in the morning you can randomly take one out and read it to be inspired. These will help motivate you every morning, or last thing at night.Every day look at your note cards. This soon becomes a habit.
Research has shown that if you do something for 21 days it becomes a habit. It’s something that you have repeated so much that you just do it automatically. Think about it, driving home, walking to the shops, you don’t even think about it, it is automatic. A habit like reading your note cards every day is a really good habit to get into!
Create mind maps
For those of you who are very visual, you may find that a mind map is going to help you not only create your goal but create a path to your goal! You don’t need to buy any fancy software to create your mindmap. A large sheet of white paper or a white board will. Start off with your long term goal and allow yourself to be creative and branch out all the ways you will make this goal a reality. This is an exercise in thinking differently.
You can do this for all types of goals and brainstorming.Be as creative as you wish with images, words, different colours, photos and other images. For some it may be easier to use software. That’s ok it depends on what works for you.Like the previous ideas make sure that your mindmap is displayed in a prominent area where you are going to see it every day.
This visual representation will help keep your goals at the forefront of your mind.
Having reminders of your goals is very important, as once the busyness of life takes over we can forget about our goals and dreams. Having something visual will “jog” your memory each day. Using a variety of methods will help make your goal even more concrete.
