That’s right you are lying to yourself!
Did you know that many of us lie to ourselves every single day. Seems incredible but it is true, and you might not even realise it!
However, there is good intention to our lies! We lie to ourselves to protect ourselves. We do it to make ourselves feel ok and to protect ourselves. Lying to ourselves makes us feel much better, however it really is only a short term solution.
Let me eloborate.
The lies you tell yourself
Let me give you some examples of the lies you may be telling yourself
- “I have no choice in my life” – This is a lie we all have used at some point. We wrongly believe, or convince ourselves that we have no choice but to live the life we are living. Really it is because we are not brave enough to push ourselves out of our comfort zone. This leads us to stay in the same situation and not move on and grow.
- “I can’t do that what will people think of me?” More often than not we don’t things because we are afraid of what people might think of us. You want to know a truth? Many people won’t care, or those who notice what you have done will have immense respect that you did what you did because they did not have the guts to do it! So by doing what the “ordinary” folk won’t do you are becoming a trail blazer.
- “It won’t work out and I will look like a fool!” – This lie goes hand in hand with lie number 2. Firstly you will know if it will work out or not unless you try. When you try never think of the word failure. Always think of the word feedback. So you try something, you make a change and it does not work out. Make a note of the feedback you got from trying this choice. It was not a failure, it provided you with valuable feedback.
- “I can’t do it until I get it right/perfect etc.” Oh this is a great one to hold you back from doing something. It has held back so many people. I can’t launch my business until I have everything in place, until everything is perfect. The fact is right now is the right time. You can’t wait to perfect something as the market, life, you and everyone else is changing. If you wait for that perfect moment you will never do what you want to do!
- “I am too old to do X.” This is a great excuse. People say to me “I can’t do that because I am too old and …” They then list off a whole array of excuses – time, money, the capacity of their brain etc etc. I have seen this when I trained people in IT. I had one student who was in her 70s, and she absolutely was determined to learn how to word process and use spreadsheets and she did. She knew it might take her longer and she would have to work harder but she did not let her age stand in her way. Remember age is just a number and should not be used to make excuses.
- ” I would be much happier if I had X.” X usually stands for money! So let me roll with that idea. Studies undertaken have concluded that people are at the optimum “happiness level” when they have a salary or income of around $70,000. Therefore in theory more money will not make you happier. The reality is, as long as you can pay your bills each month, put money on the table you should be happy. Don’t let the dream of chasing more and more money or more material items hold you back.
- “I can change my parter/boss/friend.” This is a lie that many people use to stay in relationships. They believe that although the relationship may not be going well, if they could only change the person everything would be ok. Let me tell you this is unlikely to happen. Here’s a question – how easy is it to change yourself? Yup it is not that easy right? So what makes you think you can change someone else? And if you need to change someone in order to be happy with them, perhaps you are chasing the impossible. Think about it …
- “I don’t have the ability to do X.” Sure you do. Look at everything you have achieved thus far in life. Look back at your accomplishments. Did you think you could do so many amazing things? Well you can. It is said that we only use 2% of the capacity of the human mind. Can you imagine if you could tap into just another 2% of that? You could and can be truly awesome! Don’t every believe, or tell yourself the lie that you can’t do something. You will never know until you try.
There you go, 8 lies you tell yourself or have told yourself. Don’t believe the lies, as after all they are not true but the more you believe them the more likely they will become reality. Even if they do become reality you can change!
You are awesome!
Let me know what other lies you tell yourself and how you have overcome them below:
