What is NLP?

Many people wonder what NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming is about. In a nutshell it is about looking at how we communicate and make sense of the world. If two people can communicate correctly they will find that more is achieved.

NLP is often called a technology, it is a technology of excellence. There are three parts to NLP

Neuro - to do with the brain
Linguistic - to with speech and the words we use
Programming - to do with how we encode information, and how we do things

All three elements are intertwined, are brains are programmed by the language we use. Many people never stop and listen to the language they use everyday. The words we use can tell a lot about how the person thinks and processes information.

For example,
Is the glass half empty or half full?
Coming to the last days of your holiday do you think, shoot there's only 2 days left, or do you say, hooray there's two days left for more fun and relaxation?

How you answer those questions and other questions can tell a lot about a person.

Continuing with language, listen to what words people use. For example:

I can't really see what is going, what you are saying is not very clear
I can hear what you are saying, but don't like the sound of it
Something smells fishy about this whole deal, it stinks
I can't grasp what you are saying, as we need to hit the ground running with this project
Let's sweeten the deal on this one,

So what's coming thru here?

Each person is speaking in a different language set
For example:
Visual
Auditory
Olfactory
Kinesthetic
Gustatory

These are know as Representational Systems - we all have them and use them. So listen out for them

If you can listen to the speech patterns a person is using and then use this speech patter back to them you will find that you will be able to communicate on their level.

So if two people are having a conversation, and one person's representational system is Visual and yours is Auditory, there will be conflict

 What can you do?

Stop and listen, so many people don't do this but it's so important. Stop and really listen to what the person is saying - you will then learn more about them

This is just a very basic introduction to one aspect of NLP, please look out for my soon to be published ebook on the topic
